Ferry from Dover to France

We are taking the ferry from Dover to France and have two questions: 1) any recommendations on accommodations in the Calais area? 2) is there a way (bus? train?) to get from Calais to the D-Day beaches/Normandy area?

I don't think you can get from Calais to Caen by bus. (At least my Google search didn't come up with anything.)
Paris--a long and roundabout route.
If you take the train, you will need to go via

If it fits your schedule, you would do better taking a ferry from Portsmouth to Caen. There are two ferries during the day and one overnight.

Have you checked out cheap flights from England to France? We flew on Ryan air for far less than it would have cost for the ferry. They fly into Nantes and into Picardy near Mont St. Michel. Ryanair.com (I think). The only quirk with Ryan air is you have to carefully weigh your luggage or they zap you with fees. It's posted on their web site, size and weight limits. If you know in advance you can pack accordingly and be OK.
