Favorite Restaurant in Mannheim

My husband occasionally travels to Mannheim for work and I may go with him again in the near future. Does anyone have a favorite place to eat in Mannheim or any of the area towns? I know it's not a tourist town so I am relying on those of you who live in the area or who have also had opportunity to travel through there. Is there a fun/good beer garden any where around there that you fancy? We stay close to downtown by the Main Hauptbahnhof, so walking distance from there or somewhere that we can use the train to get to. If it requires a car, I'm not sure we will have one...usually not.

Even though I live near Mannheim, I rarely go into town for dinner. The few places I've eaten at weren't impressive enough that I would go out of my way to recommend. If you're there in the summer, there's a decent restaurant in the middle of Luisenpark, which gets my vote for Europe's best urban park. If you want to venture outside of Mannheim, consider nearby Heppenheim. The old market square here is about as picture-perfect as you can imagine- there's even a castle overwatching from the adjacent mountain- and there's a few good restaurants situated here. There's another restaurant a stone's throw away by the church that looks like something right out of a Disney movie. The town is about a 25 minute ride away on a Regional Bahn. It won't look like much when you arrive at the trainstation, but follow the signs towards the Markt (or, just walk towards the church). It will be worth the effort.

I love Heppenheim. We were there last March. We would definitely go back up there. Do you have any names so I will know that I'm at the right restaurant?

The place next to the church is called "A-z". I don't remember the names of any of the restaurants on the Markt, but they're all pretty good.

Somehow, I've lived for almost two years practically within direct line of sight of the two castles of Weinheim, and I never checked out the Altstadt... until today. Quite impressive. There's several restaurants on the Markt, and although I've never eaten at any of them, it looks like a great environment for a meal.
