Susan, I always stay at Hotel Uhland in Munich. It's in a quiet residential area, about a 12-15 minute walk from the station. It's very comfortable, the breakfasts are fantastic and the staff are wonderful.

Susan, "How's the walk from the Uhland to the Marienplatz area? It's a bit of a hike from Uhland to Marienplatz, but I don't find it to be a huge effort. I usually walk up to the Hbf, and then take a "right" for Marienplatz. While it is possible to take the Metro from the Hbf to Marienplatz, that has always seemed to be more of an effort since it's only about two stops from the station.

I second Ken's choice. I really like Hotel Uhland. Great location, staff, nice rooms, good breakfast.

Hotel Viktualienmart is located at the Viktualienmarkt which is a pedestrian area of outdoor market of all sorts of different things. It's just next to the Marienplatz. Hotel Platzl is just around the corner from the Marienplatz. Hotel Uhland is near the main train station. According to the google map it's about 1000 meters (as the crow flies) to the center of the Marienplatz. Have you looked at the Motel One Sendlinger? It's much nearer to the Marienplatz than Uhland. http://www.motel-one.com/uk/motel-one-search/munich/hotel-muenchen-sendl-tor.html It also gets great reviews:

Hbf to Marienplatz is a pleasant walk. Definitely doesnt feel onerous. Most of the walk is along a pedestrian precinct (very wide) with shops and easy strolling, great people watching. We often stay near the station (hotel Eden Wolf- great hotel).

I am about to reserve Litty's Hotel in Munich. Has anyone had any experience with this hotel - good or bad?

Hi Susan, In May we spent a perfect week at Pension Lindner (http://www.pension-lindner.com/index1.htm). It is about 3 blocks from Marienplatz. We loved being able to walk anywhere in the heart of the city and to the Marienplatz or Sendlinger Tor Ubahn stations. The owner, Marion, was very helpful and quick to respond to e-mail... we were originally booked into a room without a bath but when a room with a bath became available she let me know and we snagged it. The rooms are big, bright and comfortable. We would definitely stay there again. Prost!
