I'm finding it nearly impossible to book a room for 2 adults and 2 children(ages 14 and 9)over Christmas week in Switzerland. Any suggestions to get a room in Bern, Interlaken or Lucerne? Thanks
Normally rooms are for two people. There are singles and some triples, but rooms for more people are rare. You might want to look for Ferienwohnungen. These are vacation apartments, often with one or two bedrooms and a sofa bed in the living room, also with a kitchen "nook" with cooking facilities. Only problem here is they usually want to rent them for more than one night.
The best place to find Ferienwohnungen would be on the town website for Bern, etc, probably www.bern.ch, for example (Swiss websites use the .ch extension). Luzern is in the German speaking part of the country and the name in the URL is probably the German spelling, Luzern, not the French spelling.
Cynthia, Over Christmas break 2 years ago, we stayed in Hotel Balm in Meggen, just a 10" bus ride from the train station in Luzern. We have two teenaged children and got a quad room which was lovely, and comfortable, and had a large modern bathroom. Breakfast was super. My daughter still talks about it being her favorite hotel on our 2-week trip.Spent Christmas eve at the Swiss Museum of Transportation and a boat ride on Lake Luzern and Christmas Day on Mt. Pilatus. I'm a big fan of farmhouse stays, but they may not be in the cities you're looking for. The website in Switzerland is www.agrotourismus.ch. They have lots of apartments listed.
Another possible option…
It’s been a couple of years since we were in Switzerland, but I know I recall reading recommendations in Rick’s guidebook for hotels offering triples and an extra bed for an extra charge. I seem to recall that there weren’t many in his offerings, and they’re weren’t real cheap. If you think a triple and an extra bed might work for you, you could go to the library and reference a few guidebooks to see what’s available.
I would like to kindly suggest the charming town of Thun as as a central location/option to all the cities you mention. As for accommodation, checkout the Hotel Freienhof suites for your family. If you decide to give it a try, be sure to ask for a room with a river view (also the Alps when it's clear)...absolutely fabulous!! We stayed with four people in Feb. 2009. *****
