we are a family of 4 looking to rent an apartment in barcelona and wondering what part of the city is recommended. quiet, safety and close to food shop that offer gluten free (bio shops) are priorities. proximity to public transportation and sites are a plus.

I would look at the Eixample or Gracia. The old city may be a bit too noisy, and those areas are mostly well-linked to the centre by public transport (although you might want to check the distance to the nearest metro stop with a map).
I agree that the Eixample district is probably the most appropriate for a family. It's certainly quiet and safe, but gives easy access to most all the sights you'll be interested in seeing. Public transportation will definitely be your friend. I can't address the gluten-free aspect of the question, unfortunately, but I'm sure someone else can help.
