Our family of 4 (2 children) will be visiting Vinna and Budapest next summer. Appreciate any recommendations for lodging. We will be using public transportation. Thanks / Len
I think you will find excellent recommendations in the Steves' guidebook for Budapest. If will also provide a lot of other useful information for your trip.
RS Vienna Guide Book is also an excellent source of information about that city that we used last month.
Love Vienna! Great city with kids. My 7 year old insisted we climb the Stephansdom tower every day--which we did, 3 days in a row. :) RS does have a good selection in Vienna. When you email, be very specific about what your family needs while leaving room for creative Euro hotel options: all in one room? door between parents and kids? do the kids need full sized beds? etc. I have been amazed at the interesting, unadvertised options that turn up if you just ask--and often less than the cost of 2 dbls. My fave Vienna hotel is pricey, but here it is: Hotel Konig Von Ungarn. They have the coolest family room with 2 floors. The kid room has built in beds with curtains, like Harry Potter. Cleanest bathrooms I've ever seen. www.kvu.at
You can also try renting an apartment--often a cheaper, handy option for families. www.vrbo.com has good choices.
