Family Beaches - Spain or France?

I'm taking a beach vacation to Europe this summer with my family - 15 year old and 7 year old - and I'm trying to find a good family resort with plenty of activities for the kids. We're flying into Barcelona. Where are the best family-oriented beaches? Spain or France? And, do you have any specific recommendations?

tom, the british seem to love the coast of Spain, ( well it is closer to them) and i noticed when on the Spain forums on tripadvisor.com many of the brits aske about family beach type resorts , and it does seem there are quite a few of them. France caters to children a little less I think.. Why not start by looking at the Costa Brava , its close to Barcelona, has many smaller cities and towns right on the water ( we are visiting Tossa De Mar this summer for 1st time ourselves) I would also look at Lloret de Mar and Cadeques .. and I would go on the tripadivisor.com spain forums , you can then find accomadations and attractions in the side bars. I have been to Cannes and Nice , ,and will be visiting Nice again this year,, and its fine for kids, but they are not really that kid orientated.. also by now you will find most coastal places in France booked up pretty solid for August, that is number one french holiday season!

Hi Tom, We were in Spain two years ago with our kids (they were 8 and 6 at the time) and we loved the beaches in both Barcelona and San Sebastian. I must say that San Sebastian completely captivated all of us... the beach is huge, soft, beautiful, and the water was fantastic. The tide was amazing to watch come in and out! Barcelona was fun because you're right in the middle of a big city but still laying on the beach - and plently of good people watching there too. As for a resort, not sure you'll find that outside of those giant campgrounds they have all over Europe, but we rented an apartment and loved it. We also stayed in Cassis, France for a week the year before that and loved it too - rocky/pebbly beach but gorgeous water, town, and people. Have fun where ever you end up!

We enjoyed Sitges, which is pretty close to Barcelona. Great sand castle building on the beaches closest to town. Walk south to many family-friendly beaches. Eat at La Oca in town - they love kids.
