We just decided to rent a car for one day during the Salzburg portion of our trip to explore the Salzkammergut. We've been to Hallstatt before, and have taken the sound of music tour. I thought it would be fun to have a car to explore the area on our own. Any suggestions by others who have done this before?

Hi Jill,
A really nice drive would be through the Berchtesgaden area of Germany, which is in very close proximity to Salzburg. Many nice villages and towns in this area, along with great mountain roads and beautiful scenery. Ramsau and the picturesque church there is our favorite, along with Bad Reichenhall.
Another very nice trip is to Zell am See. It's situated on a beautiful lake with some of Austria's highest peaks as a backdrop. Again, beautiful scenery along the way and Zell am See is just beautiful, and only 1:30 each way from Salzburg.
