In the past few months, practically all of Paris has been added to the Street View of Google Maps... want to know what people are wearing in Paris? Thousands of persons on the street can be seen as well as your hotel, tourist sites, places you've read about and are curious. It's absolutely amazing what can be seen using this great tool. Or go exploring... refresh your own memory. A note of caution though, don't do this unless you have a few hours to explore.
Tom, this is fun. Do you know how old the pictures are? Does a satellite pass once a day? I know nothing here. Help me out if you can.
The images are only updated every couple of years or so. As fascinating as Paris can be with Google, checking out you own neighborhood can be an eyeopener as well:) Also Microsoft has there own version at maps.live.com The "birds eye" feature is even more detailed than Google, but it only available for selected cities.
All I know about the age of the photos is that the first street views that were put up were those of the route of the last stage of this year's Tour de France which culminates in a ride up the champs elysee. That took place in July. All the additional views have been put up since then, so I'm assuming they are fairly recent.
... and Michael you are right about your own neighborhood. until recently only the main streets in my neighborhood were included and just very recently side streets and cul de sacs have been added. I know that it's not based on satellite photography, but some kind of digital camera mounted on the roof of a car, I believe a Prius, that drives around capturing the photos.
Wow, thoroughly addictive! I found our hotel, the place where we bought macarons, the Starbucks that closes at five to 8:00, the small square where we ate our Sacha Finkelsztajn piroshki, the shop on the Ile-St-Louis where I bought my cool staple remover, the Chinese restaurant we ate at on rue Cler .... What a fun way to waste an afternoon!
I know some are from April. When I was in Paris I saw a car with camera and electronic equipment with the google map sign on it driving around the neighborhood where I was staying
