Expats Community in Germany

Guten tag,
I may be going to Germany to work on a long-term project soon. I will be staying in Heidelberg. I am interested in connecting with expat communities while over there. Does anyone know of any? I would also appreciate recommendations for good expat websites. Danke! Kat~

Kat, also check with tripadvisor.com. I'm sure that there are plenty of expat communities in the Mannheim/Heidelberg area. Also google for Patrick-Henry and Benjamin-Franklin villages in that area. If you can't find anything: Every Friday night the US/Canadian/British/Australian expats of Frankfurt (only 60 miles from Heidelberg) meet at the MacGowan's Irish pub in Berger St.

Kat, Patrick Henry and Benjamin Franklin Village are military installations. You will not be allowed access unless your are Active Duty Military and have someone sign you on, or know a person who will sign you onto post. There isn't anything though on the installations that deal with expats, only military housing, offices and that sort of thing. Andreas comments on the pub in Frankfurt sounds very interesting, maybe my husband and I will go one evening as we're both history majors who take interest to the WWII era (My husband's nickname from the General is "Little Patton" :) ). A bit of neat information on Heidelberg. During WWII, General Patton enjoyed the sites of Heidelberg as he believed the city was too nice and decided to not bomb the city, instead he set his sights on the nearby city of Schwetzigen. My husband has some very interesting pictures of the day Schwetzigen was bombed that were given to his unit by a former SS soldier that oddly enough, worked in his building as the janitor. One of the pictures depict a group of men surrounding Hitler while he gave a speech on the newly built Kaserne. It's interesting to see what the town looked like during the Nazi era and the bombing compared to what it looks like today.

Amanda, ideally (but not necessarily) go to the pub on a night the Frankfurt Lions play ice hockey (in town). Usually the team goes to that pub after the match as a) it's not far from the ice hockey stadium and b) 80% of the team are Canadians anyway ;-)
