Excursions within Spain

Hola! I am studying this semester in Granada, Spain! While I am here for over 3 months, I would like to do a bit of travel, mostly within Spain. The program am I with plans excursions to Gibralter and Málaga (just returned from this one) and another to Sevilla and Cordoba. I am for sure planning on visiting Barcelona one weekend and I'm now planning one other long weekend of travel. We have Friday, Monday and Tuesday off at the end of October. I'd really like to see some different areas of Spain so Andalucia and southern Spain is out. I have no interest/desire to go to Madrid so I probably will not go there. I'm also flying out of Madrid in December so if by the end of the semester I'd really like to see it, I can head up a day or too early. I'm interested in northern Spain like San Sebastian or Santiago de Compostello. Cities like Avila, Toledo, Segovia and Zaragoza also intrigue me. Some friends are thinking of doing a trip with 2 nights in Madrid and 2 nights in Toledo. I was thinking of meeting up with them in Toledo and spending the other two nights somewhere else. What can people tell me about these cities that might help me to make a decision as to where to visit? I'd like to see places of a diverse nature within Spain. Thanks for your help! Erin

I recenly visited Bilbao, and I really enjoyed it. I was there just a day, and I wish I had stayed an extra day or two. It's the right mix of new and old, large enough to have conveniences and small enough to still have some charm. Also, I loved the Guggenheim.
