Ever been to Wurzburg?

My husband are planning to start our December trip to Germany with 2 nights in Wurzburg. Has anyone been to Wurzburg? Any advice on where to stay or what to see while we are there? There don't seem to be many hotel options, and we are hoping to get near the market center since the Christmas market should be in full swing...

Thanks!

No, but I have been to Würzburg (can also be spelled Wuerzburg). According to Meinestadt.de, there is nowhere in Germany spelled Wurzburg.

I stayed at Spehnkuch. I found it on my own, but later saw that it is recommended by RS. Nice little place, nice people, very low price for Wuerzburg. The bathroom is down the hall, but that was never a problem. It's only a block from the train station.

I visited both Festung Marienberg (the castle across the river from town) and the Residenz. Loved Marienberg; didn't care much for the Residenz.

I thought the Residenz was fabulous. It was so over the top gilt, but the artistic skill to make it all was impressive. The 3-D paintings, the vaulted ceiling with the 4 continents, and the "white room" was astounding. Have never seen anything like it. The Hof Chapel was all glittery too, but hey, that was the style back then. Fun to see and enjoy.

Would have liked to have had more time there, but we just did a day trip from Frankfurt using a Bavaria ticket for 4 of us.
