My husband and I are going to Europe for 2 weeks early March 2008. We have family near Heidelburg but would like to see some more of Europe. We have Global Eurail passes. Countries we are thinking about are France, Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy and Austria. What are some places that we should not miss?
Sorry. We will be landing on March 5th and flying out March 19th. We will probably spend 2-3 nights with family. So I guess about 10-11 days to travel abroad.
Everyone has a different "not to miss". Tell us, what sort of activities/sites interest you, and perhaps we can make suggestions.
Hello Laura. You will be in Germany, so why not do sightseeing in GERMANY ? You could ride in trains from Heidelburg to Fussen. Be at Fussen two nights, to have a day for visiting King Ludwig's castles and a gondola ride up the Tegelburg. Munich = 2 nights. And Austria : Salzburg = 2 nights. Vienna = 3 nights. Fly from Vienna to the U.S.A.
My husband and I spent only 1 week in Europe last March and had a wunderbar time! We landed in Frankfurt, rented a car and traveled down the Romantic Road to Rothenburg where we stayed a night, went to Reutte, Austria, where we spent 3 beautiful nights in the Maximilian Hotel, and each day traveled from there: day 1 to Merano Italy, coming back through Innsbruck, day 2 around the area of Fussen, Oberamagau and the Zugspitzbahn, day 3, we drove through Switzerland to Lucerne where we stayed a night, then headed north to Stauffen, Germany where we stayed in the Zum Hirschen Gasthof, drove through the Black Forest, through Heidelburg and back to Frankfurt. We wouldn't have changed anything. We loved the area so much that we're going back for 2 weeks this January!
My wife (Laura) and I honeymooned in the beginning of March in 1990. The weather was mild. I don't recall any snow but it did rain some days. We landed in Frankfurt and headed south along the black forest road to Geneva (2 nights). We enjoyed Chateau Chillon along the way. We left Geneva towards Fussen then Munich (2 nights). From there up the Romantic road back towards Frankfurt. We did this over a period of 10 days. This was a leisurely trip. I post this to give you an idea of the ground you can cover. When we were there the flowers were starting to bloom. It was a beautiful time of the year. We did this by car so you might want to check the train schedules and routes if this type of trip would interest you. Enjoy your trip.
