Europe car rental..

My wife and cousin and his wife are planning a trip to Europe in May, 2011. We plan to fly into Rome, arriving on a Saturday, rent a car, and drive to Furore (on the Amalfi coast). We will stay there fore five nights, then drive to the Cortona area, where we will stay for three nights. We will then drive to Garmisch, where we will spend three nights. Then we will drive to Munich, where we will drop the car off at the airport and use the S- and U-bahn for travel for three days. So, we will need a rental car for 12 days.

Our plans are flexible. Is it less expensive to rent a car in Rome and drop it off in Munich, or to rent a car in Munich and drop it off in Rome? Does anyone have any experience that says that one rental car company is better than another? I will get an International Drivers License. Any input 1s appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

Steve, Thanks for the quick response. I've looked at the European car rental sites and gotten pricing.

We considered renting in both countries, but when we looked at the train or air fare from Rome to Munich for four people, the costs were more than the drop off fees. Plus, the extra time involved to get the car to an airport or train station, make the trip, re-rent, etc. We need to have a car for the time in Tuscany and the Garmisch area.

I used to work for a German company in the early '80's, and have driven all over Bavaria, Austria, Switzerland, etc. In 2000 we flew to Milan and rented a car for a two week tour of Italy. So, I am comfortable with a rental, driving, and understand the associated costs. For the four of us I think rental is the best way for cost and flexibility.

I'll look over the white paper you linked to, thanks for that, and also the car rental links.

Best Regards, Chris

OK, will do, thanks!! When I was looking at plane / train tickets it was from Rome (airport) to Munich.

I will look at picking up the car in Rome, dropping it off in Milan, getting a train ticket to Brig, then picking up a car there and dropping it in Munich.

Thanks for the suggestions! Chris
