Euro to swiss francs

Can you use euro in Switzerland?

If you're staying awhile, use ATMs to get some Swiss francs: no reason not to, it's easy, fast, will save you some money (on the exchange rate,) and the Swiss bills are prettier than the euro bills (the last reason is the most important one). And yes, if you're just passing through Switzerland, you can get by with euros on a quick visit: at least, your smaller euro bills will be accepted in most stores, etc--but note that many/most businesses won't accept euro coins or larger euro bills above a certain amount, and all will give you change only in Swiss francs. So euros work if it's a day trip near the border or other quick trip into Switzerland.

That (the 2nd post) has not been Rick's experience (nor mine): here's what he says: "Swiss ATMs give euros, prices are listed in both Swiss francs and euros, and travelers can get by in that country with euro cash." Here's the link to that quote: Rick on Euros in SwitzerlandHe says the same thing in his Switzerland book.I agree that it's better practice to get Swiss francs if you're there for more than a day or so or need to spend large amounts. But let me give you an example of a common situation in which euros work fine: a year ago I went from Lake Como to Lugano and my euros worked just fine for the half day I was in Lugano, to buy lunch and a couple of small things--doing that made more sense than taking the time to find an ATM to withdraw a small amount of Swiss francs.

Nancy,
I think it may depend on where you are. Some of the towns, like Lugano, are located right on the border. They may be more willing to accept Euros Further inland, they may not be quite as willing. Also, you may not be getting a favorable exchange rate. I agree the best way to do it would be to find an ATM and take out some swiss franc...what ever amount you think you would need. Currently 100 sf is about $92 USD, which is a little worse since the start of this week.
Enjoy you visit.

I used Euros in Switzerland several years ago so this is not a new issue. B&B's and mom and pop shops may not take them, but larger places will. Specifically I used Euros at a petrol station and at a hotel in Zuerich. You will get a very poor exchange when you do that.

When I am in Zurich, Geneva and Lauzanne I often use my Euros. Most shops are used to converting.
