Has anyone ever been to the town of Ettal, just north of Garmisch? If so, opinions? any recommendations for accommodations? We are looking for a place to stay two nights the end of July that might serve as a jumping off point to visit other sites in the area. If not there, anywhere near by.... Thanks, Lois

There's not much there besides the monastery (kloster) but just 3 miles away is Oberammergau which has several good hotels and restaurants. Hotel Turmwirt and Hotel Wolf are good choices. From Oberammergau it's just 8 miles to Linderhof Castle. It's about 30 miles to Neuschwanstein & Hohenschwangau Castles and, if you travel via Steingaden, about half way there you will pass the entrance to the Weiss Kirche which is definitely worth seeing.

The Hotel Turmwirt in Oberammergau gets my vote, too.

I stayed in Ettal two Christmases ago. Like Tim said, it's the monastery or bust. Oberammergau is a better choice. Definitely stop by Linderhof Palace, and the King's other Castles if you can. Garmisch is nearby, also. Weiss Kirche is a bit out of the way, but is a great example of over-the-top Roccoco, and it is a beautiful drive to and from there.
