Has anyone been to Etretat, France, and would they recommend such a side trip from Honfleur, and at what time of day.
thank you for any comments
Etretat is about 20 miles from Honfleur and absolutely gorgeous!!! It is on the water and you have to see the three arches. Best time to go??? ALL DAY!! See a sunset!!!
It wouldn't be on my list unless I'd never seen a sea stack or an arch. The town itself is not that special, similar ones are all over the place. I suspect it's more than twenty miles, but it's time, not distance, that's the factor. Sometimes the whole freeway from the north side of the Normandy Bridge is clobbered until the cut-off toward Etretat. That's only half the problem - - if you time yourself to be up there at sunset, by definition you'll be heading home in the dark. The road from town backto the freeway is a miserable, narrow, son of a gun with plenty of curves and no side lines or shoulders. To me, it's be more of a stop if you were passing by or a place to arrive late and spend the night.
We stopped there on the way to Calais because we wanted to see the arches that the impressionists painted. It was a good 30 minute stop.
We stopped in Etretat in midday on a trip to Normandy and found the town to be cute-had lunch there. This is a great stop if you are curious to see the white chalk cliffs/falaises. Thought it to be worthwhile.
