Enough time to see Schoenbrunn gardens?

I'd like see Schoenbrunn when my BF and I are in Vienna. I'm really only interested in seeing the gardens, though I would happily tour the palace too if I felt we had enough time to do it all without rushing and stressing. As I hope to do this either during the afternoon of our last full day of the GAS tour (after morning walking tour and before Last Supper) or the late morning/early afternoon of the official last day of the tour (before we fly back to Frankfurt), we realistically only have maybe 4-4.5 hours, which includes the time it takes to get there and back on the U-Bahn (start/finish at our hotel near Schwedenplatz). Is that plenty of time to do the gardens? Would it be too much to throw in the palace as well? I know we can't see everything (excuse for going back someday!). I understand the gardens are free to enter but that some parts have a small fee associated. Correct me if I'm wrong about that. Is the entrance to the gardens easy to find from the U-Bahn station? (By the way, this will be in mid-September, if that makes any difference.)

The gardens are wonderful. The last time I was there I shot at least 200 pictures in two days time. Palace is an okay tour, if you do it, do it in the early AM before the hordes of tour buses arrive or late in the day after the buses have gone. If you can only pick one, do the gardens. Finding the palace from the U-bahn is quite easy. Should be nice in September. Enjoy, we have been many times. Vienna is a wonderful city and the gardens are worth your time.

As I recall you can walk in the front gate of Schoenbrun Palace and walk off to the right side of the main palace structure. This is if you are coming by U-bahn. The tram should be #58. I think you may be better off taking the Ubahn (U4).

Alex, do you recall if there is an entrance to the gardens that is separate from the main palace entrance?

there is a side entrance to the garden. if you take the tram there is a stop behind the garden i think it's the zoo and from there you walk back a little bit an you'll see the entrance. the palace is between 2 stops, zoo is behind the palace so it's closer to the garden.
