It depends on what kind of appliance she is using. If the appliance has a dual voltage rating (110V-240V) she maybe needs only a Euro plug adapter with two 5/64" diam pins. Read my webpage.

If she intends to use US hair dryers, curling iron, etc (high wattage items) then she would be better to buy those items in Europe. Even with dual voltage or proper converters, high wattages items do not work as well as buying local items designed to be used on 220 voltage.

Technically, because the Europlug adapter, the one with the two round pins, is ungrounded, it is limited to 2.5 amps (575 Watts). Clearly not enough for hair dryers, curlers, or straighteners.

Depends on what's a "nearby country". UK and Ireland have a different plug, and some older properties in Europe may have different plugs.

Also, the standard European adapter plugs don't fit in the outlets in Switzerland. The actual electrical contacts and voltage are the same, but the shape of the outlet is different.

Some European countries may require the same adapter, but I have different ones for UK and Italy. I bought a "universal" adapter which can be re-configured to fit almost any outlet in the world. It works, but is unwieldy. And it has no ground. Travel departments in stores or at the airport should have adapters. Maybe it's best to wait until she is in a country before looking for an adapter. Sometimes a hotel will have adapters, but I wouldn't count on it. They tend to disappear.

Yolanda, The first (and most important) thing you'll need to do is check EACH electrical / electronic device that your daughter will be travelling with, to ensure that it's designed for "world operation". Look for the "Input Voltage" on the Charger or label of each device. If these state "100-240 VAC", she will only need inexpensive Plug Adaptors. Regarding Plug Adaptors, I'd suggest that she take at least two of each type she'll need, according to the countries she'll be visiting. They're small and easy to misplace, so as she's going to be there for several months it would be a good idea to have a "backup". Have a look at This website to determine which Plug Adaptors she will need. I believe these stores are located in California, but I've found their service and shipping times are always good. Cheers!

I bought a Dynex travel adaptor at Best Buy or $22 to o to Germany next week and the package says that it works in "any country" in Europe, rest of world.
There are 3 plugs. Has anyone used this? It looks good, but ? Thanks, Deb Taylor

@Deb, The Best Buy website shows two different styles of Dynex Travel Adapter. Which style did you buy? It's important to note that a Plug Adapter will NOT change the voltage, so it's extremely important to check EACH device you'll be travelling with to ensure that it's designed for "world operation". I'd suggest taking at least two Euro Plug Adapters, as they're easy to misplace. It's always a good idea to have a "backup". Cheers!
