Eiffel Tower restos

Has anyone eaten recently at the first level ET resto, Le Tour 58? I ate lunch there several years ago, when it was called Latitude and it was very good. (I know I can get the same food for less other places but they're not on the ET!) But then they remodelled, changed the name, and (I hear) the type of service. So, what's it like now? I'll be in Paris the last 2 weeks of Sept.

We had lunch at Tour Eiffel 58 on 5/12/09 and what a disappointment. We had eaten at Altitude 95, before it was renamed and transformed into Tour Eiffel 58, on 3 previous occasions and the food was good, not great, but at least it was a nice environment. The new Tour Eiffel 58 restaurant is a cross between a McDonald's and a buffet with food that is only passable. After you are seated and read the directions on how to place your order you walk to a counter, where all the appetizers are on display in plastic dishes, your appetizer and order your meal. The servers behind the counter are all wearing baseball caps just like McDonald's. You return to your table and your order is delivered to you in a basket . . . all of it in hard plastic containers, like at a fast food restaurant. You also get a roll in a paper bag. Total cost for 4 appetizers, 2 hamburgers, 2 plates of pasta and 2 glasses of house wine -- 118 Euros. We even complained and were told that everyone else seems to love it because "you're able to get in and out fast." We doubted that and our experience was not actually that fast. I would not recommend it.

I ate there when it was called Latitude, it was okay. Mostly the company and the views were the best parts. I've not been there since it's become Le Tour 58. Have you checked Trip Advisor?

I think Rich's post and opinion/description is reliable b/c I've read others on the Helpline say the same thing in the past.

Oh la vache, unbelievable! That makes me sick just thinking about it! Surely it won't last like that.

Rich (and others), I had asked the same question back in Spring '09 and got Rich's same answer that he just posted again. I was just wondering if anyone had been there more recently and if things had changed. Latitude 95 was a treat back in '08 and I guess I'm hoping they've realized by now how terrible it was to "McDonaldize" it.

Hi I haven't lived in the US for several years now, so I miss the new words. Is "resto" the new word for restaurant? Is it commonly used all over the States?

I thought it meant bathroom........and wondered what all the fuss was about.......plastic bowls and all.

Can someone also explain why in American English you double up the final consonant before adding 'ed' in words like 'modelled' (as in OP), but not when using the word 'travel'? Is there a general spelling rule do you know? I am having difficulty explaining it to students.

In American English it's "remodeled." No doubles. I remember young people in France abbreviating the word restaurant by calling it "restau" (for example restau-u). I never felt confident enough to use it! HA!
