I read this on a website about Paris, but I can't seem to find confirmation of it anywhere else: "Before entering the Eiffel Tower, your bags will be examined by a security officer. If an item you are carrying sets off the metal detector, the officer will confiscate it." Has anyone had experience with this? If I take my PacSafe bag with the metal mesh reinforcement, could that be taken by security? What will security officers realistically confiscate? I can't imagine they would confiscate keys, which would no doubt set off the metal detectors.
Stacey come on,, thousands of those silly bags go through it every week, they do not confiscate the bag, they may ask you to open it, peek inside and off you go. Its not an unusual bag, they see it and know that middle aged women from North American are carrying them. Do no worry about it.
Do you have to be middle aged and American to wear PacSafe? Don't younger people?
Niget, nope, I think you have to be middle aged and fearful of "bag slashers".. but i bet there are mommies who have purchased said bags for their youngsters,
I think you have to like the features a bag offers to wear one. I'm neither middle aged nor fearful, but I do like the size, zippers and pockets of my PacSafe bag, and I'm not going to buy another less secure one to not look like I'm paranoid. I am however, American, so maybe that's my problem. My original question wasn't so much about saying that's the bag I'm using, it was about not wanting to lose my stuff if it is a bag that will set off a metal detector. Having never been to the Eiffel tower and reading about that possibility from someone who has been, I thought it was a legitimate question. Thanks for your input, Nicole and Nigel.
"less secure bag" nuff said. My bag is lighter, and just as secure.. only been using if for dozens of trips and years.. Sorry I mocked you, it was rude, , but I hate the marketing those Pac Safe bags do, they really convince( as on "con") tourists they need all those extra features.. its a wonder anyone travels without one.. but many of us do. As for your question, you do have to realize that literally THOUSANDS of people go up the ET everyday and it is likely at least 50-100 of them have pacsafe bags, so no the staff do not confiscate them.. that would be a nightmare for them. Seriously , they know what they are looking for and your bag is not it. ( but as I said, they may ask to peep inside)
Have pacsafe bag, never had a problem...you'll be fine...have fun!
Well, I am not old and I have a pac safe bag. I see no reason to have my $3000 camera stolen. But if I dont have my camera with me I just carry all of my stuff in my scot-t-vest. I love it.
Colleen a 3000 dollar camera,, well you aint young then either!
Is 39 middle aged (pls say no)? And I'm Canadian...there goes that stereotype...I actually like the way mine is laid out and organized (Metrosafe 250) and the size...and since I have the camera, hubby mostly carries it, and it doesn't look like a 'woman's' purse - ours looks like a small messenger bag (except when I flub up and say - Hubby, hold the purse...I always get a look...lol). Used if for last few trips - first trip I carried one of those Buxton organizer bags - could not get hubby to hold it for the world! :) To each his (or her) own. Oh, and most places will ask you to open the bag so they can take a (very) quick look inside - they check everywhere...even when we were going to museums in NYC and Washington...
Nicole, you are younger then me,, but er,, sorry to say, yes, I consider 39 to be pretty close to if not middle aged, lol , but lets just say age is only a number and you are very young at heart( your hubby on other hand sounds pretty old at heart if he still worries about holding your "purse" for you, thought that went out with the dark ages, my hubby has another decade on that and wouldn't blink about it , and he works in a shipyard so is pretty immerced in the "manly men" culture)
I think you should get a pink sequined bag and make him hold THAT for a few minutes in public..
Hi Stacey, to answer your question, no it will not. I traveled with my PacSafe (I was in my 20s to all those PacSafe-only-if-you're-middle-aged people are wondering) to the Eiffel Tower and didn't have a problem. But this was a few years ago and I don't remember having a metal detector or any issues. Then again, I was looking at the Eiffel Tower, so I don't remember a great deal of it other than it being glorious! :) I also like the PacSafe for its organizational properies, durability and size. I regularly use them in my everyday, non-traveling life as well. Not all those who buy Pacsafe are utterly paranoid. Some of us just like it for shallow, aesthetic purposes. ;)
Took my pac safe bag last March;it wasn't confiscated! I don't consider myself middle aged (at 50!). It was my first trip to Europe and I appreciated the peace of mind this little bag gave me. I carry it as every day bag, even in dangerous downtown San Diego. ;o) On the other hand, my daughter carried a slashable backback with an expensive camera, and neither of us were accosted.
I just returned from Paris, went to the Eiffel Tower with my PacSafe. No problem.
Looks like someone is trying to sell a metl detector!
I feel.....left out. I'm still using my Mentor's(Rick Steves) Official medium and small Back-pacs. I want to be a part of the "in" group. Btw, Pat said North American, not American, she to, is from Canada. I might be interested in that metal detector, I've always wanted one.
Since this has drifted a little of the subject, let me say that I often hold my wife's bag/purse and am self confident enough to do it without being uncomfortable. She uses a PasSafe bag on our journeys because she likes the way it is arranged not because of the magic stainless steel netting inside it. That bag has never caused a security problem.
