We're renting a car in Lucerne CH and driving to Neuschwanstein Castle DE. We'll probably stop at Lindau but don't really see anything else interesting. Is there anything to see between Lucerne and Füssen? ViaMichelin says three hours for quick driving --or-- six for sightseeing. After the castle we'll be taking our time driving onto Innsbruck... just wondering much time we should "pre-load" on the drive TO the castle. Pete
Actually, his spelling is pretty good - for an American. Except for "Innsbrook". Actually, Innsbruck is pronounced like the way he spelled it, but it's not a brook, it's a bridge (Bruck) in German. He might have some trouble finding it on some websites with his spelling. And, Füssen is better if spelled Fuessen. Using "Fussen" used to give a lot of problems on the Bahn website, but they've fixed that. Between Luzern (that's the German spelling, and it's in a German speaking canton) and Fuessen, you should not miss Lindau, which is a formerly walled city on an island off the coast of Germany. You could also take the ferry across the Bodensee to the town of Friedrichshafen and see the Zeppelin museum on the waterfront there, then go to Lindau. I don't think you will see many Fachwerk (half timbered) houses that far south in Bavaria. Go from Fuessen to Oberammergau to Ga-Pa to Mittenwald, in that order. You might also want to stop in Seefeld, just over the border into Austria on you way to Innsbruck.
Don't let Lee from Colorado read this post, he'll crucify you on your spelling. But I digress... 1) I'm going to estimate times based on my imperfect memory. From Füssen to GaP, the drive is just under an hour. GaP to Innsbruck, without stopping in Mittenwald, takes about the same amount of time. Two days to travel between Füssen and Innsbruck seems excessive, unless you stay the night in either Mittenwald or GaP (GaP would be my preference. Not quite as gemütlich, but better selection of restaurants). 2) As I mentioned before, Lindau on the Bodensee. Further to the east and closer to Füssen, Nesselwang is attractive, but it takes maybe all of two minutes to drive through. I also like Oberstdorf, but it's a little bit of a detour, and similar enough to Mittenwald and GaP. Now, if you're driving on the southerly route through the Alps (instead of the northern route along the Alps), I love Lech am Arlberg, but it too is a significant detour off your direct route.
Peter, As you'll be renting the car in Switzerland and dropping in Austria, don't forget to ask about the Highway Tax Vignettes. The Swiss sticker will be provided by the rental firm, but you'll have to obtain one in Austria or face fines. I believe Germany requires "Emission Stickers" in some towns, but I'm not sure which ones. Cheers!
"I believe Germany requires "Emission Stickers" in some towns, but I'm not sure which ones." From the places Peter has mentioned so far, he won't need one.
