Eating in Cancale and St. Malo

Any recommendations for outstanding places to eat in Cancale or St. Malo? My husband is so looking foward to the Cancale oysters. I would prefer the roasted lobster.

Olivier Roellinger. It is a truly world class restaurant (i.e up there with Louis XV, The French Laudry, elBulli etc). Seafood focused & apparently romantic. I want to get there if I can. Three Michelin Stars. Go to www.maisons-de-bricourt.com

Have a look through it. They have menus under cuisine. Its the Relais bit on the left you have to click after clicking cuisine. Have a look at the menus bit I think and go through the ones underneath. It will be worth it!

I have to agree with the above poster. As a chef it is a pilgramage to go there, however not always in my budget. I have had outstanding oysters from several little places in Cancale there. They are fresh, they aren't cooked, what else can go wrong. I much prefer to eat in a very rustic, worker style cafes than restaurants. And don't pass up those seafood sampler plates with langoustines, winkles, oysters mmmmm.

St. Malo. is a tourist town. After it was bombed they rebuilt it to "look authentic" and every shop except maybe 1 or 2, inside are touristy, and I've never had a good meal. If you must eat there try to find a creperie outside of the walled part. Or hop a quick train to Rennes. Rennes is a larger, more real, city and has several nice restaurants in the old part. It is fun to walk around for a few hours. If you can, DO NOT miss the Saturday market in Rennes (Marches de Lices). There's good eating!

So what are the names of some of the little cafes in Cancale? Those are the kinds of places we are interested in.

I am sorry I rarely keep track of the names of cafes and restaurants. I can remeber by sight when i return. The fun in France is to explore, and find a restaurant that looks good to you.

My two criteria when dining in France:

  1. No English on the menu (though I admit this is hard in Brittany, with so many British people) In Paris this is a must!

  2. Chalkboard menu with evidence of several erasures.
