Eating in Berner Oberland

So people have told me how expensive food is in the Berner Oberland area and that its not very good. We will be staying in Lauterbrunnen and hiking and eating our way up and down the mountains. Can anyone tell me their favorite spots to eat??!!

There is no question that Switzerland is expensive, but whoever told you the food is "not very good" did not find the right places. We have been there a number of times, hiking all over the area, and nver had a bad meal. The menu at the mountain huts may be limited, due to supply difficulties, but what they offer is generally very good. Go easy on the beveralges if you want to keep the cost down; even coffee, tea and soft drinks are expensive. A few of our favorites- in Lauterbrunnen, we thought Hotel Oberland was great for lunch on a rainy day. The asparagus soup was some of the best I've had anywhere. In Mürren, Stagerstübli makes a fine Rösti. If you crave veggies and Asian food, there is a small Asian restaurant there that makes decent Chinese/Malasian food, although the place does not have much ambiance. Up on Mannlichen ridge, a 10-minutes' walk from Kleine Scheidegg, is a nice mountain restaurant with a view deck. I can't remember the name, but it is on the right as you walk toward mannlichen from KS> In Grindelwald, Onkle Tom's Hütte, a little A-frame at the end of the pedestrian street, serves great pizza and imaginative salads with fresh ingredients. The mountain hut up on the Faulhorn, high above Grindelwald, is well worth a visit even if the food isn't all that great. In Wengen, Hotel Baeren serves gourmet-quality food made from fresh local ingredients whenever possible. Well worth a splurge for dinner if you are over that way. I am still trying to duplicate the lime-ginger risotto we had there one night.

If you want a really nice restaurant in Lauterbrunnen, take a look at the Hotel Silberhorn. RS doesn't list the hotel in the book I have but he does mention the restaurant. We've stayed there and the food was very good. You can see their full menu on their website at www.silberhorn.com.

Aly – we ate at the restaurant at the Hotel Jungfrau in Murren several times and I thought the food was very good. I especially enjoyed the fondue, raclette, and a ham and scalloped potato-type dish (served in a skillet, can't remember the name but it was very good and I'm still thinking that it was one of the best meals I've ever had). The restaurant has windows on 3 sides and the view of the sun setting on the Alps ("Alpenglow") was unbelievably beautiful!
