I've been to the Christmas markets in Germany and several years ago saw some Easter markets in Salzburg and Innsbruck, Austria. Are there Easter markets in Germany too? And does Italy also have special markets for the Easter holiday?
There are 100's and 100's of Easter markets in Germany. They have become very popular over the last few years. Some will be like a Spring festival, while others will be a show place for artisan craftwork, with some eggs going for as much as 400 euro. This website is in German, but just click on the State you will be visiting, Bavaria, Hessen, Rheinland Pfalz, etc. http://www.ostern-in-deutschland.de/ My favorite Easter market is taking place this weekend and next weekend in Seligenstadt and it is held indoors at the Abbey. Visit the basilica next door, a very old church begun by Einhard, the biographer of Charlemagne in the early 800's. The eggs and crafts presented here are of the highest quality. Many of the artisans will be demonstrating their craft. Other items besides eggs will be on show, including lace, porcelain, baskets, silk painting, pottery, wood boxes & bowls, tin figures, glass, quilted items, embroidery, and more. The atmosphere of the Abbey add a special touch to this market. The one in Weisbaden on 15-17 March, is more of a spring market with all of the stands lining the pedestrian zone, with food, drink and music. The one in Frankfurt is held in the Dominikaner Cloister on 2-3 March, and is fairly similar to Seligenstadt but not quite as large. A historical Easter market will be on 16 March, at Ronneburg Castle, located near Gelnhausen & Büdingen. On 16-17 March will be one at the castle in Kronberg, and on 23 Feb. at the Eberbach Monastary in Elteville (this is one cool monastary. If you saw "Name of the Rose" you will know what I mean) Have fun!
Yes, Germany has Easter markets, although they're not as common or festive as the Christmas markets. The emphasis is usually on selling decorative bric-a-brac, like painted Easter eggs. Mannheim organizes a market in Luisenpark (one of the most beautiful urban parks in Europe, in my opinion). Seligenstadt, a lovely old town near Frankfurt, holds a market in the town's monastery. These represent the only Easter markets I can name off the top of my head, but I'm sure others must exist. EDIT- OK, looks like Jo beat me to the punch while I typed my response!
Thanks for the info and link. I've been to so many Christmas markets over the years and am looking forward to finding some new treasures.
