Easter Markets

Easter Markets can be found all over Europe. It is so amazing to see what can be done with an egg. Each region and country will have its own style and way of decorating eggs. In Hessen, they use a wax technique and they don't even blow the eggs out, but they eventually dry out in about a year. If you want to find out dates for markets, go to the town or city websites you will be visiting. Prague has a big market, Seligenstadt does, Frankfurt and Hanau do, and I am sure every other big city will too.
Enjoy the photos of these gorgeous eggs!

Beautiful, aren't they? Thanks Jo :-))
When I left the USA to return to Austria, I gave my collection away away to friends, now I am starting a new one. Here on the farmer's markets the farmers bring their hand-painted eggs to sell, one prettier than the other.
When my children were younger, we painted our own, some of them quite nice.
Is Easter a big deal in the Frankfurt area like it is here?

Jo,

I read the article you linked to - great pictures. I did not see Frankfurt mentioned on the festival list. Do you know the dates of the Easter markets in Frankfurt? Or are some of the cities listed close enough that they would be an easy day trip from Frankfurt?

Thanks,

This lists a lot of the shows around Hessen and further afield, even down in Switzerland. A lot of the pages are in German, (it has a little translator button in the form of a British flag at the top which will translate blocks of text) but you can still see the dates, where it is, and the pictures of all these gorgeous eggs. The shows in Seligenstadt, Kloster Eberbach in Eltsville, Maulbronn and Leipzig, all have pages with great photos on them and the shows look good too. Click on Rhein Main, if you want to see the one in Frankfurt. I go to this every year and it is truly something to behold. The first time I went, I couldn't believe it. Truly, works of art. All from a humble egg. The Frankfurt show also benefits the MS society, which is dear to my heart too. These shows also have all different kinds of decorations too, from baskets, to figurines, egg stands, and eggs made out of other substances - wood, stone, etc. and everything you would ever want to have to decorate your Easter tree. You do have one of those don't you????

For all of you folks who might be in Frankfurt this weekend, 14 & 15 March, the Easter market is on. You will truly be amazed when you go to one of these markets. One of my favorites is when they take an Ostrich egg and using dental tools, completely carve it so it looks like lace. Absolutely beautiful.

Also, if you go to any of the flea markets, a lot of people will be selling eggs at a bit lower cost. The Easter markets though, present everything, the eggs, decorations, egg holders, ceramics, baskets, blown glass, etc, all together. I like to watch the basket weaver, as they have such interesting baskets, quite different then the ones in the States.

Jo thanks for posting. Has anyone ever been to any of the Easter Markets in Switzerland? I am wanting to get some eggs to add to my collection and was wanting to get some recommendations about markets close to Zurich.

Have not been able to find very much for Switzerland. Sorry.

I did go to the Frankfurt show yesterday and spent a couple of hours looking at everything and chatting with the exhibitors or watching them paint their eggs. They are really happy to explain the styles and how they do them. Chatted up the glass blower too, asked him if he knew of Dale Chihuly and the answer was yes, of course. The painted tin figures (like you get for your Christmas tree, but for Easter instead) are marvelous. I like the black and white wedding eggs too. Had one of those done for my parents 25th wedding anniversary. The little painted boxes that sometimes come with the eggs are beautiful too. It is quite nice to have a matching box with your egg!

Picked up a couple of flyers for some other cities.

One more bump to the top since Easter is fast approaching and time is running out.

Also, many churches will be having special organ concerts during these last weeks before Easter. Amazingly, the little church in the middle of Frankfurts' historic town square, Alt Nikolai, is going to have a sunrise bonfire on Easter morning at 0545, so I might just get myself up really early, just to see this.

The Kaiserdom also has concerts planned if you are going to be in the neighborhood.

Don't forget the Vienna Easter Markets!

http://www.wien.info/article.asp?IDArticle=15673

It is our family tradition to go down to the "Old Vienna Easter Market" at the Freyung and have a glass of sekt while the kids pick out one Easter egg each. We then take them home and add them to the diplay: A big bouquet of pussy willow branches in the middle of our dining room table, each branch decorated with hanging, brightly painted eggs. (I learned pussy willow branches are used as a substitute for palm branches. The palm branches are to symbolize Palm Sunday.) Anyway, Happy Spring to all you regular posters! Here in Vienna, it snowed as recently as day before yesterday --a light dusting. We are so ready for Spring!
