I'm planning on traveling from Munich to Neuschwanstein Friday, October 5. What is the ease of renting a car in Munich and driving to the castle? Is it easier to just throw more money down and take a bus tour? Also, if we do drive, is it possible to fit in Zugspitze or is that too much to get done in a day? Thanks in advance for your reply!
We took this bus tour and was VERY please. You can sit back and relax. The guide gives you information about the castles and areas as you pass them. http://www.city-discovery.com/munich/tour.php?id=1507
Rent the car and STAY there for a night or two. From Füssen it's very very simple to visit Ludwig's other castle Linderhof...but almost IMPOSSIBLE without a car. Rent your car, do NOT take a tour group, and stay in the little village of Horn Schwangau just below the castles with a fabulous view to them especially at night when they are all lit up. This is one of our favorite places in all of Bavaria. It's just idyllic. Look into the Hotel Helmerhof or any of the many other hotels and B&B's around the area.
I am definitely a car person....but especially in this part of Germany. You have the option of pulling off the road any time you want to enjoy the scenery, take some photos, have a picnic out of your car. I would most definitely try to stay a day or two. It's a fantastic area.
I'm definitely NOT a rental car person, but in this particular case even I would rent a car in order to stay in and around Neuschwanstein.
I was going to comment.... Tim recommending a rental car? What next, Lee staying in a 4 star hotel and renting a luxury car?
Cheap shot, Tom. Renting a car or taking the bus tour are definitely the most expensive options. I'd take the train. That way, you can see all the scenery without having to stop, or worry about making the wrong turn. I've been to Füssen four times (3x to see the castles). It's not at all difficult (and much less expensive) to do by train. See my webpage for directions.
