My husband and I primarily want to visit Amsterdam, and the RS recommended sights in its vicinity (and also Delft and Antwerp). Does it make sense to fly into Dusseldorf? Any advice regarding sights in Dusseldorf, as well as train connections, would be appreciated. Also how is the weather there in October/ early November?
If you want to see Amsterdam and other places in the Netherlands, it makes sense to fly into Amsterdam. If you are flying into Duesseldorf because you got a good deal on a flight (presumably with Air Berlin), remember to account for the time and money it will take to get from Duesseldorf to the Netherlands - and back, to catch your flight out. To find train connections, use the Bahn (German rail) website, following Rick's instructions: http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/tips/db_tips.htm
Laureen, for more thoughts from others, type in Dusseldorf in SEARCH box, and see discussions regarding this fun City.
Unless you're really into high-end shopping, Düsseldorf isn't the type of city most travelers go of their way to visit. Nothing wrong with it, but it's fairly modern and non-distinct. There's a nice promenade along the Rhine, and one of the residential districts across the river is VERY ritzy... but that's about it. It's easy enough to reach Amsterdam from Düsseldorf, however. Most of the fastest connections between western Germany and the Netherlands pass through here. There's only a few direct trains per day to Amsterdam, but frequent connections to Venlo and Eindhoven.
