Dusseldorf

Tagging along on a business trip with my son in Dusseldorf. Any suggestions on places to see nearby the weekend before he has to be in Dusseldorf and the weekend after? Also any suggestions for things for me to do while he is working.

I'm in Neuss as I write, cute little city my eldest daughter lives in. It is sort of a suburb of Dusseldorf. Dusseldorf is a very interesting and fun city on its own. The architecture and a walk by waterways is enjoyable. Of course, Koln (Cologne) is nearby. Aachen is within reach. I'm having a little jet lag; will ask Son-in-law for more suggestions and may re-post later today. How active are you? Will you have a car or travel by train?

Just remembered, Neuss has the Ski-Hall, an indoor ski center, similar to Ski-Dubai, has restaurants and beer-garden. A walk through Neuss reminds you of "small town" America, it's cute, etc.

The Ruhr Museum at the Zeche Zollverein coal mine in Essen is fascinating and has a lot of labels in English. Take a train from Dusseldorf to Essen and then tram 107 from Essen station to the "Zollverein" stop.

I am very active. I enjoy beautiful architecture, history, nature, and meeting interesting people. We will have a car.

Jennifer, I agree on choosing Neuß, spent a day trip from Düsseldorf in the late '80s. Düsseldorf it self is well worth visiting if this is your first time. Aside from Aachen, as recommended above, I suggest also Bonn.

Visit the Altstadt. Walk down the Bolkerstr. - great places that sell Alt style beer.

Any suggestion for lodging in Dusseldorf for a week? I would like a place that has 3 beds. I am traveling with my father and son.
