We will visit acquaintances in Dusseldorf and Cologne for three days in early September, before heading to Italy for 2 1/2 weeks.
A recent encounter in the U.S.with a tour group from Dusseldorf found them to be quite fashionably and somewhat formally attired. Will I be out of place in my more casual summer travel attire? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
If you ran into tourists from Dusseldorf here you realize you aren't going to look like them, so wear what is comfortable. I've been to Cologne 3 times and never worried about my clothing. I wear slacks in Europe, not jeans, but only because jeans are too heavy to pack. I also take capris (which I saw a lot in Germany). If I tried to dress for every country and occasion I would need a much bigger suitcase and that doesn't work for me. They will be warm and welcoming if you are personally respectful and interested in their country/city.
