Can anyone suggest a way to get to Durnbach War Cemetery from Munich? Hubby and I are visiting (soon..) the cemetery in May, 2010. We're backpacking/hostelling in Munich for 3-4 days. In and out of Munich by train. We've read and googled that we can get as far as Bad Tolz by train from Munich, but the cemetery is 16 km more out of Bad Tolz. Taxi? Train? Rental car? Thank you in advance for any suggestion :-)
I'm looking for it. As far as I can see, the village of Dürnbach is just north of Gmund am Tegernsee. There is a train that goes to Gmund from Holzkirchen. I'll try to see if there is a bus from Gmund to Dürnbach.
There is a regional train line, BOB, Bayerische Oberlandbahn, that goes south from Munich and splits in Holzkirchen. One of the three parts of the train goes to Gmund am Tegernsee. In Gmund you can catch RVO bus #9554, which goes to Dürnbach. Where you go after that, ?
The site appears to be shown on the RVO bus 9554 schedule as Engl. Soldatenfriedhof. It looks like there is only one bus per day from either Gmund or from Miesbach that stops exactly there.
The Gmund station plan shows a taxi stand, as does the Miesbach station plan.
Lee in Colorado,,, THANK you so much for the help.. we've followed the links and it looks pretty doable. A million thanks again,, :-)
I found these coordinates (N 47 46 41 E 11 44 46) somewhere and inserted them into Google maps and got a location. It's just south of Laffenthal, which is the next stop shown on the schedule, so it must be about right.
Added: The regional train coming out of Munich is part of Bayerische Oberlandbahn (BOB, really) run by Veolia Transport. Here is the railmap. The train splits in Holzkirchen, with part going to Miesbach. The rest of the train splits in Schaftlach, with part going to Gmund. Make sure you are on the section of the train for where you want to go. The map is interactive. If you click on a station, it will give you information, including taxi phone numbers.
It looks like it is a couple of miles walking from the Moosrain Bahnhof (one stop before Gmund).
