My husband and I will be departing Koln early afternoon and would like some ideas on a stopping point for the night. we want to see burg eltz (even though it will be closed) on our way to some other point. Any ideas of a good town to spend the night. We are traveling at the end of this month. we have 3 nights and will be departing from Frankfurt. Thank you for any advise.
First place, I would question your wanting to see Burg Eltz, even if it were open. The Germans obviously don't think it is a significant enough venue to provide public transportation to it. Nevertheless, two places somewhat near there, which I have visited, are Treis-Karden and Braubach. I have also heard good thing about Andernach, down river (NW) from Koblenz. I wouldn't stay in Koblenz. If you stay in Braubach, you can visit the Marksburg instead, which is a good never ruined castle alternative to Burg Eltz.
Thank you for the advice. Only reason we choose Burg Eltz is that Rick states it is his favorite Castle in Germany in his guide book and on TV. Really i just want to get some good pics from the trip so we are open to anything. :)
You might want to confirm if Burg Eltz still has scaffolding while undergoing a huge restructuring project. If you are only going to see it and not be able to tour, it could be a bit disappointing for you if the view is obscured. My husband and I were there May 2011 so perhaps the project is finished by now but I would confirm first. Despite the scaffolding, we enjoyed the tour but were still a tad disappointed that we couldn't get that gorgeous view of it. By the way, we stayed in Cochem and loved it.
