I have rented and driven in multiple European countries the past 10 years. This trip our final leg is Vienna to Prague. Discounting the expense and drop charges, are there any reasons NOT to drive this segment. We would likely spend an entire day and visit Cesky Krumlov on the way. We will already have a vehicle, rental for this leg is minimally more than already planned expense.
If you want to stop and visit small towns on the way like Cesky Krumlov then drive. Otherwise take train. Train is direct, usually faster and cheaper than car. Driving and parking in both Vienna and Prague is a hassle.
Yes I understand that driving and parking in the city is for the terminally insane. Would be dropping the vehicle upon arrival in Prague. Am also searching for a service such as Mike's Limo that will possibly give us a driver and guided tour for this day of our vacation. I have left an email with Mike's, maybe this will answer my questions. Thanks
I would firstly be aware that I've heard many car rental companies outside the Czech Republic do not permit you to take your rental into the Czech Republic.
Yes, Auto Europe did not provide a booking. Sixt however confirmed my request beginning in Munich and ending in Praque. As noted I am still exploring options for our trip. I have used the train in France, Italy and England, just try to select what best utilizes the time and itinerary we have available.
Sounds like you've done your research! Hopefully someone who's actually driven the route will pop into give you advice. I can't even trained to Prague, so I can't help you there.
John, keep in mind you need to buy freeway toll stickers for both the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Austria requires one as well but a car rented in Austria will come with it.
Why Slovakia? You don't go from Vienna to Prague via Slovakia.
Actually, it appears that the fastest drive from Vienna to Prague is through Slovakia. However, that is not the way to Cesky Krumlov.
Usually the fastest drive is toward Mikulov, Brno and then Prague. Most of freeway between Vienna and Brno is already built. It used to be faster through Slovakia (even it is substantially longer) because there has been freeway between Bratislava and Prague for a long time.
