This will be our first time driving in Germany (Europe really). We will arrive in Munich in mid April and want to see as much as we can in about 10 days (in country). I had first considered including Zurich, but have been told it's too far out of the way and is another whole trip. So, we're looking at keeping it to southern Germany, northern Austria and into Vienna and back. We're looking for driving suggestions: towns, hotels, B&Bs, cities, "must see or do" sights, etc. We have Rick Steves Munich, Barvaria and Salzubrg book for a great guide. Now we want to hear from those of your who have "been there...done that"! We want to be able to enjoy the journey. Maybe hike some (or bike) during our journey. Suggestions? Brien

Kufstein Castle in Austria is a really cool castle that's just over the border from Germany. Staying in Kufstein along the Inn River is also lots of fun. We stayed in the hyper-Tyrolean Altstadthotel Auracher Loechl, and had a room overlooking the river. Of course, Rick's recommended Halstatt is really worth the trip. Vienna is wonderful. If you happen to get there on a Monday when most museums are closed, the Imperial Treasury is open, and definitely worth a look. And just outside of Vienna is a wonderful little gem, if you're into wine, called Gumpoldskirchen. We stayed at the Hotel Garni Zur Post and it was quite nice. Great wine bars and cute town in the Vienna Woods. Good luck and happy travels!
