Driving to Mt Blanc and The Matterhorn

Ok My wife and I are not hikers, nor am I capable of taking a cable car or ski lift. That being said we have planned a trip to Aosta, Italy for September. First, we are driving to Courmayeur. Will we get a good view of Mt Blanc from there (i.e. without taking the cable car) ? Do we take the Autostrade or the side road to get the best view from Aosta ? Second, we are driving to The Matterhorn. Will we get a good view from either Antey St Andre and Breuil-Cervinia ? Thank you.

You will get what I feel is a backside view of Mont Blanc from Courmayeur. It is not nearly as spectactular as the view from the Chamonix side. If you are willing to spend about 40 euros to drive thru the Mont Blanc Tunnel you will see Mont Blanc in all its glory. From Chamonix you could take the gondola up to the top of Aguille Du Midi. You say you are not able to do this? It is a flat entrance, ride in a huge 30-40 person car not a ski chair lift. Just take the main highway to Courmayeur it is a great road. I see two ways to get to Zermatt from Aosta. IF you are going to go to Chamonix just continue from there over the pass to Martigny and on to as far as you can drive near Zermatt. OR from Aosta, go over the Grand St Bernard Pass that separates Italy and Switzerland. This is a beautiful drive. Stop at the pass to see the St Bernards. Or I would vote to go one way and come back the other. check out viamichelin.com for great road maps.
