We've decided to stay 3 nights in Sarlat and are driving from Tours; is the road fairly even? Or are there hills and cliffs which might make me too nervous (fear of heights)? Am I better off taking the train to Bordeaux and renting a car in driving in from there? Also even though we have a car, do you recommend a one-day tour w/Philippe (as per Rick's book) to see the caves? thanks!
The fastest route from Tours to Sarlat is the D943 southeast to Chateauroux, then the A20 south to Souillac, then the D703 west to Sarlat. No cliffs or steep hills. The A20, which is most of the drive, is a fast, comfortable toll road. Those used to LA freeways will think they're in heaven (until they reach the tollbooth). I haven't driven between Bordeaux and Sarlat, but the map shows the A89 east to near Perigeux, then the D110 and D47 southeast to Sarlat. Or a more direct route on slower roads, the D936 east to Bergerac, then the D660, D29, D25, and D703 to Sarlat. The slower route goes up the river valley so I wouldn't expect any serious heights. The faster route is mostly "freeway" so shouldn't be a problem either. If you're no longer planning to spend time in Bordeaux, I'd suggest the direct route from Tours to Sarlat using the A20, then exploring from there. We drove around the area for five days, it was hilly but I don't remember anything precipitous. I'm sure Philippe does a great job, and a good guide is always helpful, but I wouldn't spend the money on a guide or taxi just to avoid driving. The secondary roads (like the D series) are narrower than we're used to, but so are the cars, and you'll be fine if you watch your speed. By the time you've driven from Tours to Sarlat you'll be a pro. If you have a problem with heights you might want to stay off the turrets of some of the castles! They are easily avoided. ;) Have a good time.
Wow... thanks, that helps a lot. Yes Bordeaux is out of picture, except do need to drive there at the end to catch a flight to Nice....
