We'll be in Provence next week and my son has just recently mentioned how much he'd like to see some cave paintings while we are in France. Are there any sites that are a reasonable drive from the northern Provence area? We'll be staying near Orange and most of the famous sites seem to be a 4- to 5-hour drive.
While I have no first hand knowledge, I do know that the most famous, Lascaux, is actually closed to the public, to prevent further deterioration. A replica has been built for visitors. So, you may not want to drive that far, for a reproduction. My brother visited and was disappointed.
I'm a cave painting nut. The absolute best ones are at Pech Merle near Cabrerts, which is indeed a good four hours from Orange. The ones at Lascaux II and Font du Gaume are a bit further and not as good.
I know of none closer. The good news is that the quickest route would probably take you through Carcassonne.
There are caves with paintings throughout France, the question is are they worth a visit? Not every cave is Lascaux (or Peche Merle).
One of the greatest sites for cave paintings in Provence is actually in the Vallée des Merveilles further east, in Nice backcountry towards the Italian border. Here is a link you may find of interest: http://www.gites-de-france-paca.com/index.php?alias=merveilles&_lang=GB
But nearer to Orange is the Cosquer Cave near Marseille. That is a marvel but is inaccessible to non-scientists....
