We will be driving Zurich to Saltzburg. Passing through Appenzell, Fussen, and Innsbruck. I am torn as to wheather I should drive from Appenzell through Vaduz, Feldkirch, Vorarlberg Then Ruette to Fussen. OR should we go north from Appenzell towards Bregenz, Lindau, Immenstadt Germany, to Fussen. Which might be the more picturesque route. Any ideas or suggestions?
Both are scenic, although different. The first route is primarily through the mountains. Very scenic, but very extremely slow. The second route passes the stunningly beautiful Bodensee. Most of the route isn't in the mountains, but runs parellel to the north. Should be a little quicker via this route, unless you stop to gawk for several hours at Lindau.
I did notice the viamichelin site. I was wondering about the sightseeing route. If that was about locations along the way to stop or a picturesque route. Fodors suggests the Southern Bavarian route but the Alpine Mountainous roads through the Austrian Alps seems pretty tempting. Has anyone actually done both?
Via Immenstadt Germany or Vorarlberg Austria.
I also, unfortunately due to time constraints will not be able to stay overnight in Appenzell. Just passing through for the day. Any must do sights in Appenzell?
Hi Jay,
Appenzell is nice and the countryside is beautiful. Must see's? We didn't find any must see's for us. If you're going "off your route" to include Vaduz, I wouldn't bother. Nothing to see in Liechtenstein that you won't see in Switzerland and Austria. We overnighted in Triesenburg, Liechtenstien, and while the scenery was stunning, it wasn't different from the rest of the Alps.
If you want mountain scenery, I'd go with the Appezell to Vorarlberg to Imst and then head to Fuessen.
