driving itinerary Madrid to Barcelona

I need a two-week itinerary from Madrid to Barcelona via Salamanca, Bilbao, San Sebastian, Andorra, and anywhere else fun and exciting. I have been to Madrid and am not excited to stay there again..just using it as a starting point. I lived in Barcelona for 6 years and am excited to go back everytime I go, but believe it or not, except Andorra I have never been to any of the places that I mentioned. I've been everywhere else in the country but not there! Any help would be great. We are traveling with another couple so I'm assuming that driving is the way to go rather than train travel?

Thanks, Kent. I jut can't decide the best route to take? I'm thinking of Salamanca - Oporto, Portugal- Santiago de Compostela - Bilbao -San Sebastian - Andorra - Barcelona. What do you think? Is this far-fetched in 14 days? I want to spend at least 3 nights in Barcelona.

Pam, check Ricks last item in tour members feed back for Spain tour (find it on right side of 2008 tours and work your way to "do you have any more comments"). We found some ideas here.

We've found "Maribels guides.com She has a huge amount on the Basque areas and other areas of Spain that you can pick from for your interests.

Get Michelin Maps 573, 574 and 575.

Second the recommendation for Via Michelin web site.

We are using that & several guide books for a May drive from Madrid to Basque Spain and France (Look at Ricks guide books for France and Spain), then to Barcelona to join Ricks Tour.

Check our Fedors.com and and scroll to "Europe" for daily postings, lots of stuff here over a period of time.

To add to Kents security ideas, we noted on another site: 1. when moving into lodging unload away from your parking spot 2. When parking the car for do not move stuff in or out of the tunk 3. On overnights try to back car into a wall in garage or lot.

Thanks so much for your reply. Another option I was thinking of was also going into France from Basque Spain....is there a lot to see and do there in October...it eems to me it's mostly beaches. If you don't mind I'd love to take a look at your itinerary. You can email me at [email protected].

Thanks, I'd really appreciate it.

If you want to spend at least 3 nights in Barcelona, that leaves about 10 days to make the trip, and six stops planned. It's about 1400 miles long along the route you propose, much of it on two-lane highways....especially across the north and into Andorra, you will find that they wind around quite a bit. I would say you're looking at 27 or 28 hours total driving time....almost 3 hours/day that you're on the road to Barcelona. You may want to consider doing the western half or the eastern half to give yourself more time in each spot. Or cut off Porto and Andorra.
