Our trip to Germany this September will include mostly train travel but we'd like to spend a few days in the Rhine/Mosel region. Is it suggested we rent a car at that point to get from place to place (especially for wine tours) or will the train suffice? How's parking in those towns (cheap)?
Its just like any other wine region...best seen by either car or bike. Parking was free last time I visited.
Trier is a delightful surprise...dine along side the river in a local guesthaus...you will enjoy yourselves immensely.
Hi Anne,
We prefer having a car. We stayed along the Mosel for 4 nights last Oct. and loved it! We also spent one day along the Rhine and stopped at Bacharach and St. Goar We had no problem with parking. In Cochem and Bernkastel-Kues we paid a few Euro to park in lots but in Bacharach, St. Goar, Zell and Beilstein it was free. Parking fees, when we paid for parking, was minimal.

Last May we did most of the region by car, but spent another couple of days in the area using the train. No comparison, car was better. Seldom was parking any issue at all and, I think, the only time we paid was for a 3 day overnight in St. Goar. It's a super area, enjoy!!
