Driving in the morning from Zurich to Stuttgart. We have all day and was wondering if anybody know of some interesting stops on the way that is not far off the main road to see. I think we are going to visit the Rhine Falls...any other ideas?
Meersburg (castle and town), Tubingen (cute town), Waldenbuch (Rittersport factory and cute town), Sindelfingen (Mercedes factory), castle Lichtenstein near Reutlingen--this is a really neat one.
Two recommendations. The view from Lindau on the Bodensee is amazing. Burg Hohenzollern (ancestral home of the Prussian royal family) near Hechingen isn't the most interesting castle on the inside, but it's pretty stunning from the outside. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.
I thought Burg Hohenzollern was particularly impressive the way is sit up on this mountain top overlooking the land. But it's not an ancient castle. It was built in about 1850 as a residence for Kaiser Wilhelm I. Farther south, in the town of Sigmaringen, the southern Hohelzollern family started a castle of the same name a thousand years ago. It's been added onto since then and partially rebuilt after a fire in the 19th century, but much of it is intact for hundred of years. Those two castles are pretty far east. Farther west, you can go through the Cuckoo clock town of Triberg and up what's called the Schwarzwaldbahn to Hausach (Black Forest Openair Museum). From Hausach go up the Kinzig river to Freudenstadt. From Freudenstadt go east and visit the university Town of Tuebingen on the way to Stuttgart.
Thank for the great ideas everybody Lindau looks very nice and Burg Hohenzollern looks very impressive. I will map out some of the other places to see if can make a plan a see them. Thanks again!
