Driving from Paris to the Dordogne

I am wondering how impossible it is to navigate departure from Paris. I am driving to the Dordogne in July and considering if it's better to take a train to CDG and get rent a car at the airport instead of getting lost in the endless roundabouts and general snarl of Paris traffic. Generally, I like driving in cities, (I've not driven in Paris). Would appreciate any information on leaving central Paris and driving south to the Dordogne.
Thank you.

We always rent our car and pick it up at Orly... easier than driving the Periferique. If you take your GPS it is a breeze. Put a marker on the exact spot where you get your car and then it makes returning it easier and quicker.

Even faster is taking the TGV to Libourne, near Bordeaux, and renting a car from the train station there. Dordogne is just east.
