Driving from Munich to Lake Como area. Planning to stay 4-5 nights. Should we make the drive in one day? Any suggestions on Lake Como area? Thanks in advance.
debra, It would help to have a bit more information. Are you planning to drive from Munich to Lake Como and then return to Munich? Renting a car in one country and dropping it off in another usually comes with expensive fees. Keep in mind that for driving in Italy, EACH driver will require the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which is used in conjunction with your home D.L. You'll also need to be vigilant to avoid ZTL areas, as steep fines will result. I'd suggest opting for a comprehensive CDW. Finally, a GPS along with a good Map would be a good idea. The town of Varenna (on Lake Como) is a big favourite with many here, and is a convenient "home base" for day trips on the lake. On that particular route, I'd prefer travel by train, as it will be faster. I've never driven from Munich to Varenna, but suspect it would be a LONG day. Happy travels!
Ken, thank you for replying. After Lake Como we are driving to Switzerland, then on to northern France and Paris. We have driven our last two vacation and really enjoy the ability to be spontaneous.
debra, I assume you've allowed for the hefty fees for dropping the rental car in another country? One other point to note is that for driving in Switzerland (and other countries), you'll need the highway tax Vignette. If you're caught without it, expensive fines will be the result. Cheers!
