Lovely drive ahead: From Salzburg you can take the Großglockner toll road up Austria's tallest mountain. On the other side you'll see a beautiful little mtn. town (Heiligenblut) and then drop into the Carinthian countryside. Then I'd go to Lienz and from there you have a choice: direct south to Cortina with its Alpine venues or farther west to Brixen in German-speaking South Tirol. This is one part of Italy that has yet to be discovered by many Americans! See some of the sights at www.suedtirol.info. Bozen/Bolzano is the capital.
From Cortina your road will wind down toward Treviso and eventually into Venezia province.
From Bozen the autostrada will take you to Verona and then east, although you have other choices that are more direct.

Thanks Martin..However,I want to take a days halt between the 2 cities since we are travelling with a toddler.Maybe Heiligenblut would be a good option.

Hi Ron,

We pretty much made the same trip two years ago. We drove from Ramsau (Berchtesgaden and Salzburg area) then over the Grossglockner Road and spent the night in Heiligenblut. Only difference was that we then went to Alta Badia (Dolomites) instead of Venice. We loved our stay in at the Pension Ederhof in Heiligenblut. Beautiful rooms (Grossglockner Panoramablick), good buffet breakfast and stunning views! Actually, the entire drive was amongst simply spectacular scenery! Hopefully we'll get to go back again.

Our recent photo's of the Grossglockner Road and the Pension Ederhof are at:

Hope this helps.

Good advice from Martin and Paul. You could take the Grossglockner Road and spend some time at the "Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Hohe" and have a nice meal at the Panorama Restaurant. Take a walk and view the Grossglockner, Austria's highest Peak and also view Austria's longest glacier, the Pasterze. Also, along the Grossglockner Road you can go to the Edelweissspitze which at 2,632 meters is the highest point you will access by car. Reportly from its peak you can see 37 peaks higher than 3,000 meters and 19 glaciers but when we got to the Edelweissspitze it got so cloudy that we had very limited visibilty and could not see much. The conditions can change in an instant. It did begin to rain and then sleet while we were there in May. After traveling the Grossglockner Road going on to Heilegenblut is a great place to spend the night. We stayed at the Edelweiss Pension across the stream and down in the valley. The walk up to the town from there is steep but very scenic. The beautiful little church set against the Austrian Alps makes for some great photos. If you drive on over to Bolzano and take the Great Dolomite Road through Cortina and on to Venice you will also enjoy some amazing scenery and many wonderful photo ops. Word of caution though, you very well may be enticed to stop for a night somewhere along the way, maybe in Canazei or Cortina. A beautiful drive.
