My daughter and I will be in Barcelona for three days then taking the overnight train to Paris for three days. I was thinking that we should then fly to Marsaille and rent a car then drive back to Barcelona to catch our flight back to the US. Is the drive between Marsaille and Barcelona worthwhile. We have two days to drive it, I am told it is about a 4 1/2 hour drive total. Alternative ideas welcome.
I think a drive could be fun if you had a few days and the right attitude.
I don't see how it is physically possible to drive that far in 4-1/2 hours.
You'd also likely face stiff drop-off fees if you rent in France and drop off in Spain.
Consider flying directly home from Marseilles.
Or fly from Toulouse. If you expect to use Easy Jet, (watch the add ons) I think they are Toulouse to Barcelona. Air France has a comprehensive schedule for short flights. Check the "via michelin. com " site for driving instructions, times and costs. The drive from Marseille in summer can be very long and challenge your self control. There are the autoroutes. I'd avoid driving about Marseille, but you are in luck because MRS is actually not in Marseille but Marignane, a relatively easy airport with car rentals. In general it is more expensive to rent at airports and rail stations.
