Any suggestions for driving from Lindau Germany to Fussen Germany? We have a van and have to be at the Neuschwanstein Castle by 850 AM so scenery would be nice but need to get there otherwise we miss our tour. I have heard about driving through Austria vs. Autobahn versus German Alps. The Mapquest route takes us through Germany in 1hr 30min or the German Alps in 1hr and 25 min. Danke.
If you aren't afraid of driving fast, the Autobahn via Memmingen is a bit out of the way but by far the fastest option. I've also driven the B12 over to the A7 and its not bad. A few small towns where you need to watch your speed, but other than that its an easy, quick and scenic drive over to the A7
If your priority is the 'time' factor, then take the 4 lane A96 to Memmingen to change to the A7. I've driven the B12 / A7 route via Isny, but it's uphill and 2 lane almost to Kempten and you run the risk of getting behind a truck that you can't pass (quite a few seem to take that route) and you may miss your starting time.
Maybe it's the time of day that I usually end up driving that stretch of Autobahn, but I've found the A7 south of Memmingen to be one of the few segments of the Autobahn network where you can trully drive as fast as your car or nerves allow you. There's little tractor trailer traffic, as most head off towards Switzerland and Austria through A96. Driving to Kempten via Isny is much slower, and taking the Alpenstraße via Immenstadt and Nesselwang is even slower still.
ViaMichelin shows a "Alpenstrasse" route takeing the B308 via Immenstadt and then meeting the A7. That route only takes 22 minute longer (1h44m) than the fastest route on the B12. The true Alpenstrasse is very scenic, particularly the switchbacks out of Bad Hindelang, but quite a bit longer, and maybe a little tight with a van, although the RVA bus does that route.
