Driving from Lausanne to Chamonix

We would like to rent a car in Lausanne (or nearby) on May 14 to drive around the French/Swiss Countryside and then continue to Chamonix (instead of the 4.5 hour train to Chamonix). We are having difficulty finding a rental car as Europcar is quoting us $848 for the 1 day, I'm assuming since it is inter-country. Can someone offer advice on a good way to do this drive for a reasonable price? Thanks!

I took the train with an overnight in Martigny then on to Chamonix next morning. Worked fine for us howver we did have a hotel expense that we would have preferred to have in Chamonix. Sometimes perfection is not possible due to geography and schedules.
