We are trying to decide if it's worth the drive, or if we should just go to Salzburg as planned. Anyone ever done that drive?
We drove from Reutte to Salzburg along the Alpine Road (not really mentioned by R Steves). It was a beautiful ride; we stayed at Bad Weisee, a charming lake, along the way. Or you can go the autobahn much more quickly.
I drove from Munich to Salzburg on the autobahn. It was easy and fast scenic. Four days later I drove from Salzburg to a town just south of Stuttgart. I got caught up in a massive and I mean massive traffic jam due to a Slovak dumping a load of aluminum which is, evidently, hazardous! Instead of quick three hour max drive I was on the road for 8 hours. On the plus side I met some nice people who were in front of me and behind me in the traffic jam. They were the ones that told me what was going on. Also, on the plus side, the traffic jam took me through some beautiful scenery. So, the lesson for me was that it's fun to drive in Europe, but factor in major traffic jams. I've been told since that my experience is not that uncommon.

Linda, I checked out the website www.mappy.com and entered your "itinerary" in the left hand column. It's a great tool to use in that it tells you what routes to take, how much it'll cost in gas, etc. It says it'll take approx. 6hrs55min and is 680 km. I drove from Salzburg to Vienna several years ago--seemed like it took forever. We stayed in Vienna for a few days then took the train to Prague--left the car for free at the pension we stayed at. We had purchased the Czech train pass. This worked out well for us. Also, the rental car companies don't like their cars going into the Czech Republic. They actually have you initial a clause on their rental agreement. By the way, Freiburg is a fun town on the western side of the Black Forest. We spent several hours there last year then travelled to a small town just inside the Black Forest to spend the night. It was a smaller town and we found a pension for less $$. If you need more info, send me a message. Have fun.
