We are a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 girls pre teen. We are driving from Frankfurt to Murren Switzerland and would love any suggestions on where to spend the night and sights along the way
Unfortunately, you won't make it by car to Murren. No tourist cars permitted. You can make it to Lauterbrunnen just below Murren and you can park your rental car in the multi-story garage. Cost is about 14-16CHF per day depending on the day of the week. Important note. Your car must be equipped with a properly installed and visible Swiss driving vignette. Big fine if you don't have one. Most rental cars will be equipped with one.
Its a straight shot of 4 and a half hours down (up?) the A5. I drive to Lauterbrunnen from England in nearly a full day. But then I don't have two pre-teen girls. If I had to stop I would stop at Freiberg and get to the spa, or Strasbourg or anywhere in Alsace, or Bern. Not knowing what you like or if 4 and a half hours drive is too long, I can't say which would be best.
It's such a shame to have to deal with a rental car in Switzerland. The public transport is so wonderful and easy - and your girls are totally free wth you on ALL public transports all over Switzerland.
Tim reminds me that there is good DB service from Frankfurt all the way to Interlaken Ost where you get the train up the valley.
