We are arriving at Cologne by train (9.45am), from Amsterdam on June 11th. We expect to see the city in a couple of hours and take our rental car to start a journey that will finish in Munich on june 13 at night(we"ll stay there 4 nights). Our next stop, after Cologne, will be anywhere between Koblenze and Bacharach to take a short cruise through the Rhine. Need recomendations for a short cruise during the afternoon. We hope we can get to Heidelberg to spend the night. Next day see Heidelberg, maybe Stuttgart and spend the night at Rothenburg. We don't have hotel reservations for those two nights so we can be flexible. What do you think about that? We are a family of four with two teenagers. We'll appreciate any recomendations.
Luis, I have driven this route several times. This is the itinerary I would do. June 11: pick up car and drive to Bacharach (1hr39min). Take Rhine cruise, roundtrip, to St. Goar. Spend night in Bacharach. June 12: Drive to (1hr18min), and tour, Heidelberg. Drive from Heidelberg to Rothenburg (1.5-2hrs). Take Nightwatchman tour of the town. Spend night. June 13: See other sights in Rothenburg then drive to Munich (2.5hrs).
The reason for the above itinerary is that driving all the way from Cologne to Heidelberg and taking a round-trip Rhine cruise in the middle would be too much for one day.
Have fun on your trip making lifetime memories with your teenagers! I did!
Thank you Denise. We liked the idea of spending the night at Bacharach. In that way we might enjoy the area a little bit more.
